Convenience aside, since I've unlocked the mastery, I like to dive at random locations just to appreciate underwater sceneries. Devs have put a lot of effort in many of them. Somehow it is much more fun with the speed and all the effects of skimmer diving. The biggest disappointment though is that you cannot mount up while you're underwater.
